Home » Embrace the Power of “What If” – Mary
Mary is much like any other single parent. Ferrying her daughter to and from sports clubs, doing the weekly shop, working full time, and somehow trying to fit in 30 minutes for herself to unwind.
The thought of trying to squeeze in a new qualification seemed almost impossible. But Mary did it – and so can you!
Be inspired by Mary’s story and find out more by coming to one of our Advice & Guidance events.
Leaving school with no GCSEs, she had gained a qualification in Business Administration while in work. But, after being overlooked for promotions and pay rises, Mary decided enough was enough.
“Life’s too short and I didn’t want to look back and think ‘if only’ or ‘what if’?”
No English or Maths qualifications? No problem.
Although Mary didn’t have English or Maths GCSEs, she was able to enrol on a course at BCUC with her work experience and the NVQ level 3 she’d gained in Business Administration The Foundation Entry route Mary chose enabled her to gain Functional Skills qualifications in English and Maths, as well as the study skills – and confidence – to complete her degree.
There are lots of degree courses at BCUC tailored towards those who need to boost their academic qualifications, earning these essential qualifications in the first year of the course.
Concerned about being able to afford to go back to study? Don’t worry.
Many people returning to study need to consider the financial implications of their decision.
After speaking with friendly, expert advisors at BCUC about what funding was available, Mary was able to access a bursary in her first year and, as the course is devised with families in mind, it was flexible enough to allow her to work part-time while studying.
Nervous about going back into a classroom? We can help.

The whole thing has been such a positive experience and I’ve gained so much more than a just a qualification. My whole outlook has shifted about what is possible and I’ve gained a new-found confidence. I only wish I’d done it sooner.
