About the course

The level 1 in Professional Studies is designed to provide an introduction to the world of business and travel and hospitality. After completing this course, you will be able to progress to either Level 2 Business or Level 2 Exploring Tourism, Hospitality and Events depending on your career choice. During the programme, you will study a number of themes designed to prepare you with the skills, knowledge and behaviours required within the industry. You will be exploring communication, business ideas, digital information and events and have the opportunity to develop your organisational skills. During the year you will also have the opportunity to attend trips and visits, complete a volunteering role and gain knowledge and experience through industry guest speakers.

Entry Requirements

The Entry requirements for this course are as follows: A minimum of two GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including English Language or mathematics Or a relevant Pre-Foundation learning programme with your tutor recommendation and GCSE Grade 3 in English Language or mathematics. There may also be an additional assessment.

Modules

During the course, you will study a number of themes designed to prepare you with the skills, knowledge and behaviours required within the industry. You will be exploring communication, business ideas, digital information and events.

Assessment

There will be a number of themes that will be delivered to you during the year and assessments will take place in a number of ways. Written coursework is assessed via both written and practically. Written coursework is assessed through reports, essays and other creative ways. Practical assessments that take place will be undertaken with activities such as role play, demonstrations and presentations. Taking part in college events , such as open evenings, and undertaking volunteering activities, will also be used to assess the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to work in the industry.

Careers & Progression

This course is a combination of two occupational areas - Business and Travel and Tourism. You can move up to the Level 2 Diploma in Exploring Tourism, Hospitality and Events, although you will be required to fulfil a work experience placement within industry to do so or Level 2 in Business. Some of our level 1 learners go on to secure a career out of their work experience placements that range from local hotel chains, restaurants to the local theatre. Our level 2 learners have progressed to Level 3 in either Tourism, Hospitality and Events Management or Level 3 Business and/or moved into industry to become club/ski or camp representatives, passenger service agents, cabin crew, hotel supervisors and travel agents.

Enrichment Activities

You will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of extra curricular activities offered by the college such as various clubs, sporting opportunities and guest speakers. In addition to this, you will have the opportunity to attend a wide range of trips and visits and participate in industry specialist sessions.
