About the course

This course aims to prepare you for working in the Dance Industry. You will have the opportunity to specialise in one, some or all of the following dance styles; Ballet, Tap, Commercial, Jazz, Contemporary, Dance for Musical Theatre as you create your own bespoke dance course through unit selection. You will also have the opportunity to develop your skills through cross collaboration with the HNDs in Acting and Musical Theatre by selecting units such as Acting, Singing, or Physical Theatre. For those looking to progress into teaching there is the optional unit of Working in Creative Education where you will have the opportunity to participate in a work placements delivering Dance to younge people in a variety of settings. Mandatory units include Creative Research Project where you will develop a personal research project into a topic of your choice and Working in the Performing Arts Industry. 

Your course will conclude with a Final Major Project where you will have the opportunity to work with a professional company in an intensive project creating and devising your own work for performance.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements are a level 4 qualification such as a HNC in a relevant subject. You should also have at least 5 years experience in Dance across two styles. You will also be expected to participate in an audition.

Assessment

Your assessment will be in the form of assignment briefs. Your assessed work will be a mixture of both practical work aligned with an academic underpinning. Assessment work will take the form of practical and theoretical coursework. Evidence required may include the following: practical classes, workshops, rehearsals and performances, essays, presentations and a final dissertation. You may also be expected to produce google sites, edited video footage and voice recordings. This will be assessed internally by your tutor and verified by the awarding body.

Careers & Progression

This course can lead you on to a BA (hons) Top Up at Burnley College or a place of your choosing. This can also lead to industry working as a freelance artist, working in education or the private dance sector. Some students have also progressed into the leisure industry.

Additional Details

Equipment Needed

Black gym attire and leotards are required for dance classes with appropriate footwear such as ballet, tap, jazz and character shoes. Students are expected to purchase one course t-shirt at £10.


Equipment Supplied

You will have access to industry standard performance and rehearsal spaces. The department also provides access to high-spec video cameras, changing facilities, ballet barres, acro equipment and PCs/laptops for theory lessons.


Enrichment Activities

You will have the opportunity to attend a wide variety of trips and visits. Trips include a three night stay in London to attend ‘Move It!’ one of the world’s biggest dance conventions, visits to local theatre productions across the North West, practical workshops with working industry professionals, involvement in community theatre projects and as well as a three night stay in New York, with a Broadway show and workshop and a Dance Class at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Studios. We offer additional training with our Dance Academy and Musical Theatre Academy facilitated by our tutors, providing further creative and performance opportunities.
