About the course

You will study a range of topics designed to expand your current performance skills and prepare you to work in theatre, community performance settings or in education. You will learn how to plan and facilitate workshops to a chosen demographic which includes relevant learning theory as well as practical skills and techniques. The course provides opportunities to work in community settings including a 10 week placement of your choosing, which could be in education, retirement facilities, working with people with disabilities or in a prison setting. You will create a performance project as an ensemble and tour this to a community setting and the course culminates in a final performance project where you have full creative control of the planning, devising and delivery which builds the skills necessary to be able to work in the industry as a Community Theatre Practitioner. You will be encouraged to work extensively with outside agencies, workplaces and community groups to manage and organise performances and workshops throughout the year. The course is delivered by Burnley College subject specialists and is aimed at students who have completed their foundation degree or are completing the second year of their university course in a related subject. Students who have completed this course have gone on to work in education as drama or dance teachers, own their own production companies or are working as freelance community arts practitioners.
