About the course

Develop and refine your dance performance and technical skills in a variety of styles including Ballet; Contemporary; Jazz. This course will encourage you to become a well-rounded dancers developing your technical, performance and choreographic skills across all dance styles. You will develop an understanding of each style and explore contrasting techniques and practitioners to find your own style as a dance artist. You will research the Performing Arts Industry in order to understand current trends and developments and how to promote yourself. You will perform in public performance projects inclusive of Dance Showcases performed in both years of study. All projects replicate the demands of the industry with a robust academic underpinning essential for further study at higher education.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade 5 or above which includes: English and Mathematics.  At least three years training and experience in a style of Dance is essential.

Modules

Your course will consist of two core modules. Module C Dance Skills Development and Module F The Performing Arts Industry. In year 1 you will cover the following unit: C9 Performing as a Dancer as part of an Ensemble. Year 2 of your course will consist of two further core units. C7 Exploring Performance Styles; C8 Creating Performance Material. The second core module Module F The Performing Arts Industry which consists of unit F16 Planning a Career in the Industry which is split across the two years.

Assessment

The content of your assessment will be outlined on an assignment brief; the design of these will be explained during induction. For every assessment there will be a clear deadline by which the work must be submitted to your assessor (course tutor). Your assessed work will be a mixture of both practical work aligned with an academic underpinning. Assessment work will take the form of practical and theoretical coursework. Evidence required may include the following: practical classes, workshops, rehearsals and performances, reflective milestone logs and extended pieces of writing underpinned by research. You may also be expected to produce presentations and google sites, edited video footage and voice recordings. This will be assessed internally by your tutor and verified by the awarding body.

Equipment Needed

Black gym attire and leotards are required for dance classes with appropriate footwear such as ballet and jazz shoes.


Equipment Supplied

You will have access to industry standard performance and rehearsal spaces. The department also provides access to high-spec video cameras, changing facilities, ballet barres, acro equipment and PCs/laptops for theory lessons.


Enrichment Activities

You’ll join a wide range of theatre trips to London and Manchester and get involved in community projects and workshops. Attend the world-renowned Move It Festival! Join our dance academy and musical theatre academy, participating in numerous College performances to build up vital experience. International trips to New York and Los Angeles.
