About the course

Students will develop their knowledge, understanding and skills through practical workshop sessions, class work, personal research, project work and external visits. Topics covered include Drawing, Design and Presentation Techniques, Manufacturing Systems and Control and Sustainability. It is important that students, as future designers, develop a passion for designing for the future.

Entry Requirements

At least five GCSEs at grade 5 or above in a good range of subjects, including both English and Mathematics. Additional entry requirements for this course are: a grade 5 in either Art & Design or Design Technology. 

Assessment

A Levels are assessed via external examination and assessed practical piece (production of a prototype and research portfolio).

Careers & Progression

Many progression pathways open up beyond studying at A Level. Academic progression would be through either: BA (Hons) in Product Design - concentrating on the design of innovative products, systems and services, including consumer goods, electronic gadgets, sustainable products, sports and healthcare equipment, packaging and transportation; BSc (Hons) in Product Design - concentrating on the design of products for manufacturing, digital, industrial, electronics and medical applications, placing technology and scientific advancement at the core of the design process or BA (Hons) Furniture and Product Design - developing innovative designs for the consumer market, in areas of commercial and domestic furniture, interiors, lighting and home-wares. Career pathways would be: Product Designer; Textile Designer; Furniture Designer; Interior and Spatial Designer or Architect.

Enrichment Activities

These will include visits to manufacturers of materials and products to view processes and procedures (both man-made and natural). The purpose of the visits will be to view the handling characteristics, as well as manufacturing systems from the design stage - through to delivery of the end product to the consumer.
