About the course

The course is designed to give you an overview of all of the Emergency and Military Public Services. You will look at the entry requirements and recruitment strategies, as well as their roles and responsibilities. You will have the opportunity to develop your fitness levels by participating in individual and group competitive sports alongside completing required fitness assessments to enter various Uniformed Services. Other key skills will include developing essential employability skills such team work, communication, punctuality and navigational skills by undertaking expeditions. Throughout the course, you will participate in trips, visits and activities that will enhance your knowledge of a Uniformed Service, in order to make an informed career decision.

Entry Requirements

Two GCSEs at Grade 3 or above including English and Mathematics or a relevant Entry Level qualification.

Modules

The course introduces you to the basics of working in the Uniformed Public Services. This includes investigating employment opportunities, developing an understanding of the importance of well-being and being physically fit when entering and working within a Uniformed Service, enhancing current skills in teamwork and recognising the value and necessity of discipline and self-discipline, appreciating the role of health and safety within a Uniformed Service and carrying out expeditions to improve map and navigation skills.

Assessment

Assessment across the Level 1 course is varied to develop key skills required to enter a Uniformed Service. These methods can include the following: coursework, active learning tasks, practical learning tasks, case studies, reports, role plays, discussions, table top exercises and presentations. Assessment is varied based on the units studied with the overall aim of developing a well rounded individual ready to progress to a higher level of study or employment. You will be assessed continually throughout the academic year to track progress and development.

Careers & Progression

Achievement of a Merit or Distinction grade at Level 1 will support progression onto a Level 2 Diploma in Uniformed Public Services. Progression is also available onto any other Level 2 applicable course or an Apprenticeship programme. After completing the Level 1 course, applying for a Military Service is available with options of the Army, Navy, RAF or Marines, role dependent based on additional qualifications and skill set.

Enrichment Activities

For enrichment students will meet industry professionals for the police and military personnel. You will attend the local fire and police stations where you are given the opportunity to speak to working service personnel and take part in activities relevant to that industry.
