About the course

Develop and refine your dance performance and technical skills in a variety of styles including Ballet, Contemporary and Jazz. This course will encourage you to become a well- rounded dancer developing your technical, performance and choreographic skills across all dance styles. You will develop an understanding of each style and explore contrasting techniques and practitioners to find your own style as a dance artist.

You will research the Performing Arts Industry to understand current trends and developments and how to promote yourself. You will perform in public performance projects inclusive of Dance showcases and full scale Musical Theatre production and Pantomime. All projects replicate the demands of the industry with a robust academic underpinning essential for further study at university-level.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade 5 or above including English and Mathematics or a relevant Level 2 qualification.

You should have at least three years’ experience and training in at least two styles of Dance.

Modules

Year 1 of your course will consist of two core modules. Module C Dance Skills Development which includes: C7 Exploring Performance Styles; C8 Creating Performance Material; C9 Performing as a dancer as part of an ensemble. The second core module is Module F The Performing Arts Industry which consists of unit F16 Planning a Career in the Industry Year 2 of your course will consist of two further core modules. Module G Personal Performing Arts Profile: Using Development Plans to Refine Skills; Producing a Personal Project; Using Material for Self-promotion and Networking. Module H Collaborative Performing Arts Project: Undertaking a Defined Creative or Administrative Role; Using Creative Collaboration to Develop a Project; Producing a Collaborative Project.

Assessment

The content of your assessment will be outlined on an assignment brief; the design of these will be explained during induction. For every assessment there will be a clear deadline by which the work must be submitted to your assessor (course tutor). Your assessed work will be a mixture of both practical work aligned with an academic underpinning. Assessment work will take the form of practical and theoretical coursework. Evidence required may include the following: practical classes, workshops, rehearsals and performances, reflective milestone logs and extended pieces of writing underpinned by research. You may also be expected to produce presentations and google sites, edited video footage and voice recordings. This will be assessed internally by your tutor and verified by the awarding body.

Careers & Progression

Continue your studies at prestigious dance schools and conservatoires including Northern School of Contemporary Dance, The Hammond, Shockout Arts and Addict. Or move straight into employment in roles such as Choreographer, Dancer, Fitness Instructor, Dance Producer, Freelance Artist or Dance Teacher.

Additional Details

Equipment Needed

Black gym attire and leotards are required for dance classes with appropriate footwear such as ballet, tap, jazz and character shoes. Students are expected to purchase one course t-shirt at £10.


Equipment Supplied

You will have access to industry standard performance and rehearsal spaces. The department also provides access to high-spec video cameras, changing facilities, ballet barres, acro equipment and PCs/laptops for theory lessons.


Enrichment Activities

Trips include London Theatre visit with two West End shows and a professional workshop, visits to professional theatre productions across the North West, practical workshops with industry professionals, involvement in community theatre projects and a three night stay in London to attend ‘Move It!’ one of the world’s biggest dance conventions. We offer additional training with our Dance Academy and Musical Theatre Academy facilitated by our tutors, providing further creative and performance opportunities. You will also benefit from a range of guest speakers. International trips to New York and Los Angeles.
