About the course

This course will give you the skills and knowledge to support your progression to a career in the industry. Key areas of theoretical study are: Health and Safety legislation and working to industrial standards, which are aligned to a range of practical skills covering specialist cable connection, termination and fabrication techniques to meet industry requirements. On this course you will work with different applications of wiring insulation, understand the importance of safe isolation, earth bonding, working with both metal and plastic conduit systems used in industrial situations. You will work to British Insulation Standards. You will be working in our state-of-the-art industrial standard workshops which will give you the best foundation for a career in the electrical industry.

Entry Requirements

A Level 1 Diploma in Electrical Installation with at least a Merit grade or an appropriate Level 1 Diploma. Direct entry with GCSEs at grade 4 including English, Mathematics and Science.

Assessment

Assessment is via ten formal practical assessments within the workshop environment and four Health and Safety tests, including Safe Isolation.

Careers & Progression

On successful completion of this course you may progress to an appropriate Apprenticeship or Level 3 Diploma as a Sixth Form student. Careers that this course may lead to include self-employed electrician, building services engineer or a range of roles in the management within the construction industry.

Enrichment Activities

The division is focused on links with the community and community projects, offering the opportunity for work experience for full-time learners. All areas regularly host and compete in regional and national skills competitions with World Skills, SPARKS and HIPS. Other examples of extra-curricular activities include: employer-sponsored 'Job of the Term' awards; construction site visits; entry into national trade skills competitions; excursions to national trade exhibitions; voluntary building work; visits to buildings of architectural significance. You will also have the opportunity to visit industrial sites linked to electrical installation.
