About the course

Gain a broad knowledge of many biological aspects relevant to everyday lives - from biochemistry and molecular biology to ecology and human physiology. In this course you will also develop the skills to apply biological principles to solve problems in medicine, plant science and genetics and further your understanding of the human body and the natural world. In A Level Biology you will study the world around you, including disease, immunity and ecology. You will gain insights into a wide variety of topics which will further support your learning in many areas, including biomedical sciences, psychology or sport. You will develop practical skills across the two years leading to an additional endorsement qualification required by many universities.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade 5 or above which includes:English and Mathematics, Grade 6 in Biology or Grade 66 in Dual Science

Assessment

You will be assessed through examination, with 2 examinations in your AS year and 3 exams in your A2 year. Throughout the 2 year course you will also be assessed on your ability to carry out required practical work.

Careers & Progression

Due to the diverse nature of the course in terms of subject knowledge and skills, an A-Level in Biology can lead to a wide range of jobs, apprenticeships and further scientific study at University. Past students have gone onto study, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Psychology, Zoology, Marine Biology, Pharmacology, Sports Science, Nursing and Midwifery. Students who wish to study Biological or Medical subjects at university will usually need to take A-Level Chemistry as well.

Enrichment Activities

Witness research in action by attending one of our University trips. Join our dissection club, take part in an ecology field trip or join our Summer residential trip to Edge Hill University and trips to Biology in Action lectures and the Zoo, with future planned trips to the Natural History Museum.
