About the course

Our Applied Science course gives students the opportunity to explore scientific principles and applications across a range of subjects. Whether it’s researching the latest advancements in genetic engineering, exploring the uses of cutting edge physics in medicine, or developing a mastery of various laboratory based techniques, this course is ideal for anyone who has a clear scientific or health related career path that they want to progress in, or for anyone who just has a keen interest in Science, and can’t wait to take that passion even further. It allows students to fully appreciate the importance of Science in today’s world, along with how it is interwoven into everyday life, industry and research.

This Advanced Level vocational course is equivalent to three A Levels and offers an excellent combination of practical and academic study in preparation for university and employment. This course also allows students to specialise in their chosen area of Science during their second year of study.

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade 5 or above or a relevant Level 2 qualification.

Modules

In their first year, students will cover units in Principles & Applications of Science I, Practical Scientific Procedures & Techniques, Science Investigation Skills, Laboratory Techniques & their Applications, Physiology of the Human Body and Human Regulation & Reproduction. In their second year, students will cover units in Principles & Applications of Science II, Investigative Project and Contemporary Issues in Science. Students will also complete four optional units based around their chosen pathway. Pathway choices include: Biomedical Science, Applied Science and Forensic & Analytical Science. Assessment across the course is a mixture of external examination and internally completed assignment work.

Assessment

There following units are externally assessed Principles and Applications of Science I and II, Science Investigation skills & Contemporary Issues in Science. Other units will be internally assessed using a range of assessment methods including practical work, coursework, presentations and research tasks.

Careers & Progression

Allied Healthcare Professional roles such as Radiography, Nursing, Biomedical Science, Forensic Science, Paramedic, Physiotherapy and Healthcare sciences.

Enrichment Activities

Additional subject-specific activities and visits are organised to bring learning to life and help you to achieve your ambitions. You will also enjoy seminars and workshops led by guest speakers. Past and planned activities and visits have included: Bodyworld Exhibition in London, industry visits, such as the East Lancashire Health Trust laboratories, and University Taster Days.
