About the course
Become a photographer, graphic designer or illustrator, freelance artist, textile designer, set designer or even work in the fashion industry.
The Pre-Advanced Diploma in Art and Design Skills course explores experimental and creative methods within 2D, 3D and digital communication. On this course you will be given an introduction to a range of specialist pathways. You will learn how to develop creative ideas, skills and intentions in response to tutor-led and live briefs, and will gain an understanding of the creative process from research to realisation. You will be working on a variety of themes and will have the opportunity to work across different disciplines including: drawing, painting, mixed media, fashion design, printmaking, photography and digital art. This course is the perfect option if you are not ready for entry to an advanced course and want to experience and develop skills in a diverse range of practical and theoretical studies. Pre-advanced Art and Design is devised to help you acquire the relevant knowledge, skills and confidence to progress, thrive and achieve your potential on a Level 3 programme.

Entry Requirements
A minimum of three GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, preferably including Art & Design, or a related subject; or a Level 1 Diploma (Art); and a GCSE at Grade 3 or above in English/Maths, plus a portfolio of work presented at interview.

Assessment
The completion of a portfolio showcases your skills and knowledge and will prepare you for progression. All assessment is holistic, based on portfolios of work produced in response to assignments. Five common assessment criteria are used to assess all work produced throughout the qualification. Reviews of work will be undertaken as an on-going process with formative assessment within set deadlines throughout the academic year. This will culminate in summative internal assessments (Pass. Merit, Distinction) on completion of the units.
Careers & Progression
On successful completion of this course you may decide to progress onto a level 3 course, or an apprenticeship. This would allow the opportunity to further your progress onto a wide variety of Degree courses. The skills and knowledge learned on this course are transferable and can be applied to a variety of roles. Careers that this course may lead to include Graphic Design, Fashion Photography, Textile Design to name a few.

Equipment Needed
You will need sketchbooks and a set of your own materials and equipment for independent study. A list will be provided prior to commencement of the course.
Equipment Supplied
Our open plan studios provide a contemporary, industry focussed working environment. You will have access to suites of iMacs, Photographic Studio and Dark Room, as well as Specialist 3D, Textile and Print-Making materials and equipment.
Enrichment Activities
As well as working with professional practitioners on live briefs you will have the opportunity to take part in external competitions. Throughout the course there is a programme of guest speakers and National and International gallery visits for you to participate in; for example Manchester City Gallery, Liverpool Tate, London Galleries, Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the Knit and Stitch Harrogate; recent residentials have included trips to Paris and Rome.
