Burnley College celebrated International Women’s Day working with Sir John Thursby Community College to highlight exciting careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
Year 10 students spent the morning participating in exciting activities, specially-created by Burnley College Tutors, ranging from conducting flame tests in Chemistry, to trying to decipher and crack the code in Cryptography. They tried their hand at computer coding, before taking on computers in a game of ‘Guess the Number’. Learners had their interests in electronics sparked, examining the input and output on motherboards.
Potential career opportunities were explored in STEM industries with our Tutors sharing key insights into what it takes to succeed in the rewarding sector.
The Women in STEM Day was an initiative created by Burnley College’s School Liaison Team to encourage female students to study STEM subjects beyond school and pursue a career in these sectors. This is due to the underrepresentation of female students in these areas.
Chris Halstead, Physics Teacher at Sir John Thursby Community College, said it was clear the students got a lot out of the morning:
“It was a great trip, Students were made to feel incredibly welcome and the sessions were very well planned.”
If your young person has a passion for STEM subjects and is considering studying them beyond school, our next Open Evening for years 7-11 takes place on Wednesday 7 May.
