Adult Learning: Meet our Team
Our Adult Learning Team is comprised of two expert, friendly and approachable members, who are armed with all the information you need to succeed.
If you’re considering a career in education, hands-on experience is key. Whether it’s working with children in their early years or supporting pupils in schools, placements are an essential part of your learning journey. Designed to provide practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge, placements give you a unique opportunity to build skills and confidence for your future career.
Below, you’ll find answers to common questions about the placement component of our courses, including Early Years Practitioner, Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools beginning and Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools.
Placements allow Learners to apply the skills they learn in a real-world setting. For instance, students in the Early Years Practitioner course (12 hours per week placement in a nursery) play a critical role in shaping children’s early learning experiences. Engaging with babies and children up to five years old teaches you how to support their growth while building your understanding of developmental milestones.
Similarly, students in our Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools and Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools courses (both requiring 12 hours per week in a school) gain valuable classroom experience. You’ll collaborate with teachers, assist in managing classroom activities and work closely with pupils. These placements equip you with insight into teaching strategies, classroom behaviour management and maintaining a positive learning environment.
Hands-on practice offers more than skill development; it also allows you to build connections in the sector. From colleagues to mentors, the people you meet on placement can inspire and guide you as your career unfolds.
Each role within your placement gives you the chance to immerse yourself in meaningful tasks. For example, as an Early Years volunteer, you may help with activities like reading, arts and crafts, organising meals or supervising playtime. Every moment contributes to nurturing young minds in a safe, structured environment.
On the other hand, volunteering as a teaching assistant means working directly with teachers and students. You’ll take part in lesson preparation, assist with small group learning, manage behaviour and provide essential administrative support. No two days are the same, and every task broadens your understanding of the education system and your ability to work within it.
Yes, all placements require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This is a standard safety measure designed to protect the wellbeing of the children and young people you’ll work with. Obtaining a DBS check might feel daunting, but our Student Services team is here to help.
If the cost of a DBS check concerns you, there is good news. Financial support options may be available through Student Services, ensuring that the process remains accessible to all. We’re committed to breaking down barriers, so you can focus on your studies without added financial stress.
Returning to education is a bold and rewarding step, and you’re not alone on this path. Many of our Learners come from diverse backgrounds with varied experiences. Whether it has been years since you last studied or this is a new chapter in your life, we’ve designed these courses to support you every step of the way.
Placements, in particular, bridge the gap between theory and practice. They help you gain the real-world confidence you need to succeed.
It’s never too late to follow your passion and start building a career where you can genuinely make a difference.
Remember, we are here to answer your questions and provide the clarity you need to make thoughtful decisions.
